Het verhaal speelt zich af in de jaren tachtig in het landelijke Middenwesten van de Verenigde Staten. De moedige 11-jarige Gitty ontdekt op een dag dat haar geliefde vader een rijke man in een silo van haar familie verbergt om zijn boerderij waar de zaken niet goed gaan te redden. Ze wordt nu gedwongen te kiezen tussen het redden het leven van de man of haar familie te beschermen tegen de gevolgen van hun daden.
